Matt Schultz

Matt Schultz has had an extensive professional career in the law and Iowa politics. In 2003, Matt graduated with Honors from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He jumped right into law school at Creighton University where he earned his law degree and in 2006 passed the Iowa bar exam.

Matt’s legal career began in Omaha/Council Bluffs where he started off doing insurance defense work. Later as a partner at Coats, Schultz & Watson, LLP, he had a general practice working in litigation, family law, estate planning, business law, contracts, worker’s compensation, and mediation.

While in law school, Matt was elected to the Council Bluffs City Council. He served four years as a city councilman until he was elected Iowa Secretary of State in 2010, defeating a well-known incumbent. When Matt was Secretary of State, he was the youngest statewide elected official in the United States and the youngest Secretary of State in Iowa’s history.

In 2014, Matt ran for the United States House of Representatives but fell short in a crowded field for the Republican primary and was unsuccessful in the special nominating convention. That same year Matt ran for Madison County Attorney defeating the incumbent with more than 60% of the vote. Matt served as County Attorney for more than 8 years. Matt resigned in 2023 as County Attorney and joined the law firm of Lombardi & Miler, PLLC.

As Madison County Attorney, Matt gained extensive criminal experience prosecuting many felony and misdemeanor cases, including murder, sex abuse, drug and alcohol crimes, and those responsible for the burning of the Cedar Bridge in Madison County. He also represented the County in their civil cases including windmill utility and zoning issues that were litigated in district court and the Iowa Court of Appeals. As County Attorney Matt also reviewed and prepared contracts, open records requests, ordinances and provided legal advice to the County elected officials, departments, and various boards.

Matt Schultz has a unique skill set that sets him apart, with extensive experience in criminal law, local and State government, litigation, and business and contract law, representing his clients on broad and complicated issues. Matt is in his element in the courtroom, the government, and the boardroom. Matt has also lived abroad and speaks Spanish fluently.

Matt Schultz is a father of five children and in his free time loves to spend time with his family, run and bike, go backpacking, and cheer for the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs, and the BYU Cougars. Matt is an Eagle Scout and served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Argentina.
